It is snowing this morning here in Ketchikan. It has been back to back storms since the winter started. At this moment in time there are very few fishermen who will go out in the storms. Then National guards men, they are still digging out Cordova who had 18 feet of snow so far this winter.
The harsh weather in Alaska makes for a difficult fishing season on all the types of crab, especially when ice problems develop. Cancelled flights have backed up crew travel in to Dutch Harbor. The cold weather has meant that ice is forming rapidly, but is still a way's from St. Paul. Meanwhile, the F/V Baranof, a 180 foot crab vessel, briefly ran aground in Dutch Harbor and has to be checked out by the Coast Guard to certify there was no structural damage before she can go fishing again.
Have a great day and happy sails to you.
