Cornelia Marie heads back to the Bering Sea

The F/V Cornelia Marie has been out of commission since the middle of February with a replacement of our "reduction gear" needed. This has been a costly and burdensome repair. The entire crew has been off since Capt. Phil's memorial on February 21st.

Finally, the crew is headed back to Alaska to finish up the long Opilio season. We still have a couple of trips left to meet our crab quota. Unfortunately, most of Alaska, including Dutch Harbor is experiencing a late winter storm with blowing snow and freezing temperatures.

Despite the icy conditions, the Cornelia Marie is anxious to get back to work. The crew consists of Derrick Ray as skipper, Steve Ward as Engineer, deck boss Freddie Maugatai and deck hand Ryan Simpson. We will be hiring another fisherman from Dutch Harbor to help out while the boys are away. Josh and Jake are dealing with their father's affairs and it is unknown if they will return to finish the season.

Tomorrow, Captain Harry Lewis from the F/V Incentive will be talking on the (internet) radio about Capt. Phil. Capt. Harry was a great friend of Phil's and wanted to express his thoughts and share some fond memories. Tune in March 13, 2010 at 3 PM Eastern time at http://www.mhbradio.com.

The passing of Capt. Phil continues to weigh heavy on our minds. We are always grateful to everyone who emails. We do read them all.

I have never missed an episode of Deadliest Catch since the beginning. Watching like that you soon find out that all the captains and crews suddenly feel like your family, some more so than others. It's like you've known them forever. You feel their pain and tiredness and ups and downs just as they do. Captain Phil Harris was the first one to get to my heart as he was such a special man with so much life to offer. Josh and Jake are truly "Ding and Dong" and I love it. Those boys were Phil's pride and joy (most of the time) Learning of Phil's stroke was really hard, hearing that he was recovering was wonderful and filled me with hope. Learning of his passing was devestating. I think I cried for days, not just for Phil but also for Josh and Jake. Watching these last couple episodes was so much harder than I could have imagined. I thought I had accepted what had happened, but seeing Phil in the hospital, knowing what he had gone through and watching the expressions on his face was way more than I had been prepared for. His moments wiith his boys was heart wrenching, seeing Josh trying to be so strong for everyone. Jake having a hard time trying how to deal with everything that was happening and seeing Johnathan break down was so emotional. I just wanted to be there for all of them for support and hugs that seems so needed. In the medical field I have dealt with a lot of deaths and families but this one seemed so personal. I sobbed for hours at what we have all lost. The next episode of the other captains learning of Phil's passing will be very hard also as they had been told he was doing so well. One great man who touched so many lifes in so many ways. Captain Phil will sail again as his spirit will always be with his boys and the Cornelia Marie. God bless you Phil, you are in a better place than those of us left behind. I am hoping to find out some information about the Cornelia Marie and Josh's quest to purchase the rest of the ownership. Does anyone know what is happening? I know Josh was trying to find investors to help but I was wondering if we as friends, fans and family could help out. There are so many of us all over the world, we should be able to come up with a large portion of what is needed. Any one have any ideas?

I am a big fan off the CM from the Netherlands. I loved Phil so much.I still cry about his loss.It is terrible. I found his signature on the internet, printed it,and have it tatooed on my arm. This is my way to remember him for ever.People ask about it.And as long as you thalk about the person that is deceased,he is not dead. I have also a picture printed from the internet and there is a candle nex to it. Josh and Jake...you are wonderfull.Your father really loved you. You could see that straighaway. He loved you more than enything in the world.don't forget that please. You are great.I pray for you and your dad every day and continue doing that as long as i live.Do what ever YOU think you must do because YOU have to carry on now without your great dad and you can.I now you are strong enough to do that. You and your dad will always be on my mind. xxx love youxxx

While watching the first episode last night I really started to cry when Phil and Sig traded Jakes. Just thinking about that time that Jake could have been with his dad but who would have thought the skipper that never quits so soon. I feel for Jake and Josh, their loss is immense.

I watched all eight hours of the "D.C." marathon on Discovery this past Saturday (I can't get enough of that show!) and cried like a baby during Capt. Phil's segments. (Thank God for Edgar Hansen and that end-of-season stunt he pulled with the dummy. He provided me with some much-needed comic relief! After so much crying, I needed the laugh. Thanks, Edgar.) When I see the promo for the new season, and see that close-up of Capt. Phil, I just completely lose it. My floodgates just open. The new season is gonna be a rough one. My heart still aches and my tears still flow. I can't believe he's gone. We miss you so, Captain!

Joan Marie, you're not alone in your sentiments. I'm with you.

I completely agree, Lisa W. I'm addicted to "Catch" and will definitely continue watching what, IMHO, is the absolute BEST TV show EVER!, because I, too, like all the other boats, captains, and crews, but without Capt. Phil, it will definitely be different, that's for sure. (I'm wondering if the CM will continue to be a part of the "Catch" fleet after this season. If she is, I think it would be a nice tribute to Capt. Phil, provided they keep the CM's colors because her color scheme is his, but it would also be a constant reminder that he's gone.)

going to be very hard watching the new season without Capt.Phil.He was so much fun to watch.I hope his boys will continue on the boat and continue making their dad proud.I have been watching reruns on discovery channel.Just not going to be the same watching the show when we see the cornelia marie and hes not there. But i will continue watching because the other captains are funny too and the feuds are a blast to watch.I always will miss the pranks capt.phil used to pull on the other boats! We miss you and god bless captain phil and his family!

Amen, amen, amen to everything you said, Kristina! Josh and Jake, you are not alone. We of your "Catch" family are all with you in spirit during this difficult time. God bless the both of you (and all who knew and loved our beloved Capt. Phil). Our love, thoughts, and prayers are with all of you. Thank you for sharing your wonderful dad with all of us. He is so dearly loved and so sadly missed.

My thoughts and prayers continue to be with Josh, Jake and all of Capt. Phil's family and friends. I wish there were words that we could all say that would make everything 'ok' for all of them. I hope that, after reading some of the posts, all of the crew of the CM and the rest of Capt. Phil's loved ones (family AND friends) know what a profound impact he made on SO MANY lives!!! That shows what a GREAT person we all came to know and care so much for--even if it was 'just through t.v'. Safe journeys to all the fishermen of the world and God Bless!!!!

I echo Gail's and Janessa's sentiments 1000%! My love and prayers to all the "Catch" captains and crews, especially the crew of the Cornelia Marie. Safe fishing and God bless you all!!
